Latin word of the day: EGO — self

1. Ego (n) /ˈɛːɡəʊ/ = ego (self): your conscious mind, the part of your identity that you consider your “self”.

He has the biggest ego of anyone I’ve ever met. 😩

2. Egotist (n) /ˈiːɡəʊtɪst/= ego (self) + ist (person): a person who considers himself to be better and more important than others.

To be a great director, do you have to become an egotist? 😎

3. Egotism (n) /ˈiːɛɡətɪz(ə)m/ = ego (self) + ism (sets of beliefs): a feeling that you are more important than other people and not care about them.

His egotism prevents him from really loving anyone else but himself. 💔

4. Egocentric (adj) /ˌiːɡə(ʊ)ˈsɛntrɪk/ = ego (self) + centr (centre) + ic (relating to): self — centered, thinking only about yourself.

Babies are entirely egocentric, concerned only with when they will be fed next. 🍼 👶

5. Egomania (n) /ɛɡə(ʊ)ˈmeɪnɪə/ = ego (self) + mania (madness): the state of having an obsessive, intense love for yourself. 💖

6. Egomaniac (n) /iːɡə(ʊ)ˈmeɪnɪak/ = ego (self) + mania (madness) + iac (of): a person who is extremely self — absorbed. 💓

The egomaniac could never accept that his coworker had an idea better than his own. 😤

7. Superego (n) /suːpərˈiːɡəʊ/ = super (beyond)+ ego (self): the part of mind that makes you aware of right or wrong and make you feel guilty if you do something wrong. 😡

Your superego comes from what you’ve learned from the parents and teachers and other adults in your life.

8. Ego-surf (v) /ˈiːɡəʊsəːf/ = ego (self) + surf: search for your own name on the Internet! 🏄🏻 🌊

I decided to take a break and do a little an ego — surfing!
