I try to listen to the New York Times daily podcast everyday to keep updated on what is happening in the news. I like news podcasts because I can get ready for class or go for a run while listening to it. Television and articles take time to sit down and more focus for me. I like this podcast because it’s very a reliable source and the sound and production is high quality.

Here are some of the sounds that I wrote down as I was listening to the podcast.

  • The voice of the host introducing the show (not recorded during the interview)
  • The voice of the host
  • A short theme song(?)
  • The voice of the person being interviewed
  • A transition song that starts loud but than lowers in volume once the interview begins and it plays underneath their voices until after he introductions of the new topic
  • Recording of a press speech trump made.
  • Ominous music at the end of interview
  • Advertisements that are recorded sepraretly
  • The music they always use duign the the “what else you missed today” section of the inteview.
  • Recorded clips from public officials speaking
  • Host voice over

The Daily uses the songs as transitions songs for the most part. for the majority of the interview there is only the two voices so there is nothing to be distracted by but when they transition to another part of the story or on to the ending what did you miss part they use music to tell the listener it’s a new part. I believe that they use the same handful of songs for each podcast which makes the listener more familiar with it. The music they use is normally slow and simple which fits with the serious tone of the topics they discuse. This episode was about a written document, but in other episodes they will use excerpts from a speech to add information and this makes it more reliable.
