xD

There is visibility with the xD including when Catmull put their offices in the center of the open floor after Disney bought Pixar. They wanted to be accesible to everyone, no matter what rank they are in the company. They wanted to be approachable. Additionally Disney was poorly decorated with no natural light and many blocking structures, so they changed that after the companies merged to make it a better experience.

There is also a lot of feedback in our tutor texts. For example, they set up Notes Day at Pixar for people to candidly say their opinions and figure out problems. When the companies merged, they created Braintrust, which held regular meetings between staff members to identify and solve problems. They encourage employees to be candid in all communication because there is more moral baggage with being candid. In addition, it is a feedback platform with no authority that’s an open and energized discussion.

With affordances, the Pixar company is able to work as a team with Disney animation to create wonderful movies because of Catmull’s principles.

iA

There is site specify with iA, including that. Pixar Animation Studios campus was built for community and to encourage people to communicate (soccer field, volleyball court, swimming pool, six-hundred-seat amphitheater) to enhance ability to collaborate.

iD

There is a lot with hierarchy of information and Creativity Inc. For one, the organizing the workplace in a flat structure allows everybody to drive their own projects forward at their own place. They encouraged discussion between everyone.

For layering and separation, Pixar designed the company to be many parts all overlaying each other. They all have to come together in order to create a company that works together efficiently. Thus, each part is layered on top of each other-but not in a way where it’s hierachical. It’s not separated. There’s freedom to discuss problems and ideas with everyone in the company.

With natural color, Pixar brought in natural light to their offices, unlike in Disney where the offices were darker. They also redecorated the office making everything visible. This allowed workers to function better and be happier in a space.

In the idea of small multiples, one of Catmull’s main ideas is that a brilliant team with a mediocre idea is greater than a mediocre team with a brilliant idea. Thus, the idea of a team working together then creates a bigger picture, a better end products product. Each person is a small part of the team, but when multiplied, they are able to create something wonderful.
