The story “Time and Distance Overcome” is a story about the invention of the telephone and the telephone line that came with it. On the outside that is what the story discusses; Alexander Bell’s invention. The deeper meaning of the story shows peoples reluctance to change. This is sown in how telephone was not the invention we think of today back when it was created people despised it because no one had seen anything like it. It was new. It was different. People fear change, they fear things they do not understand and the telephone scared people because of it technology. Bliss goes on to talk about how it was not accepted at first but the more people that began to try and use the telephone the more people got used to it. The people at time were strongly against the telephone line. It had to be put up on peoples private land and for people in that time period their land was the most important thing to them. A farm does not want a huge pole going up in his land and so he showed his anger towards the telephone. It was a crazy genius invention but it was to crazy for its time. It scared people and brought out the fear of change in people and this is still around today. People are still scared of technology and other innovations that people have trouble understanding.
