Time and Distance Overcome at first seemed strictly about the telephone poles but as you read, you understand the true meaning of the text. I believe this was written to show that every action can have both negative and positive effects. Bell believed that the telephone would be revolutionary, that it could be something to unite everyone together. Instead, it caused chaos and mayhem. People didn't want to be connected, they did’t like the view of wires in the skyline, they didn’t want them on their private property. It became a war between telephone companies and the people. The people of this era, much like today, held strong views and a reluctance to change. Eventually the poles were put up and everyone was forced to adapt to this change. Not only did the poles cause a major upset between telephone workers and the average land owner, they also paved the way for brutality and fueled hateful action. The poles began to be used for lynchings in response to the race war at the time. Bell had no intention of creating such a killing device, but ultimately, him introducing the telephone poles caused other outcomes that were severely negative and aided in the massive race war which is still going on today. Though the telephone has brought about success and more efficient communication, not every person is going to accept change. They may even use change for evil acts. That is the risk one takes when introducing a new idea or expansive operation to the public which cannot be monitored or controlled.
