Bookworm is a widely known term that is used for an ardent book reader.

The word itself can be laudatory to academicians but more often used as a gentle pejorative on someone who delves themselves into books and is more of a quiet person, an introvert or, an academic.

From a connotation point of view, it has a studious connotation, sometimes suggesting that the person is so absorbed in their books that they are oblivious to the world around them.

We hear the following phrases about bookworms every now and then …

To be a bookworm

meaning someone who spends a lot of time reading or studying.

Bookworm’s paradise

describes a place that is filled with books and is ideal for someone who loves to read, such as a well-stocked library or a cozy bookstore.

A book dragon on the other hand is a relatively recent term popular within book lovers and online communities.

From a connotation point of view, it is a laudatory term which implies that the person doesn’t just consume books quietly but cherishes, collects, and maybe even hoards them with a fierce love and protectiveness.

A bookworm would pale in comparison to a book dragon! Book dragons tend to have a voracious appetite when it comes to consuming books, and they do so like no other!
