Asking for and Giving Directions in English
Asking for directions can be scary in a second language.
This lesson will teach you:
- how to ask for directions
- prepositions of location
- how to give directions
Ask: How do I get to + name of place.
How do I get to the bank?
How do I get to the library?
Use these imperatives when saying where to go:
- go straight
- turn left
- turn right
- go two blocks
- it will be on your right/left
- cross Davis street
- go to Davis street
Prepositions of location:
Question: Where’s the bookstore? (look at the map above)
Answer: It’s on the corner of Main Street and Maple Street.
Question: Where’s the swimming pool?
Answer: It’s behind the grocery store.
Question: Where’s the newsstand?
Answer: It’s across from the movie theater.
Question: Where’s the pay phone?
Answer: It’s next to the bank.
Question: Where’s the music store?
Answer: It’s between the newsstand and the bank.
Question: Where’s the grocery store?
Answer: It’s on Davis Street.

Question: How do I get to the Chinese restaurant?
Answer: Go straight to the corner of Main and Maple. Turn left. The Chinese restaurant is between the bank and the bookstore.
Question: How do I get to the post office?
Answer: Cross Davis Street. The post office will be on your left, next to the Italian restaurant.
Question: How do I get to the swimming pool?
Answer: Cross the street. Go the corner of Maple and Main. Turn right. The swimming pool will be on your right.
