We’ve just added another energy heavy hitter to our team here at Enosi. AGL’s former Senior Director of Public Policy, Stephanie Bashir, has joined us to help accelerate energy transformation, innovation and disruption of the status quo, to create a customer-centric sustainable future.

Australia’s energy system is in the grip of fundamental changes — as the sector makes the sometimes difficult transition to a greater use of renewable sources. Stephanie is one of dozens of senior executives from the energy sector who have jumped ship in the last 12 months. Many of the departing executives have felt the changes required wouldn’t happen soon enough within the large power organisations.

Bashir said, “Customer preferences are changing wanting more control over their lifestyles. The digitalisation of services and new energy technologies enable a more affordable and sustainable customer centric ecosystem. There are new players with innovative business models, offering new service offerings and new ways to fill the gap that traditional energy players have failed to address. The energy ecosystem needs to allow for an equal playing field to allow the new competition and growth that will benefit customers and the system overall.”

Bashir joins Enosi, which is now home to several other former energy industry executives, including Steve Hoy, Enosi’s CEO. Hoy was former Global Lead for a team of subject matter experts in smart grid systems as part of IBM’s Global Center of Competence for Energy & Utilities.

Mr Hoy advised many utilities worldwide, including every Australian distribution business, on the development of smart grid business models and key technologies including blockchain. Hoy saw too many utilities and grid companies refusing to approve business cases that overwhelmingly supported cleaner, cheaper ways of providing energy to consumers.

When the opportunity presented itself to lead an energy startup in the blockchain space, Steve tendered his resignation to IBM within two weeks. It was the beginning of his journey to lead Enosi, which is based in Sydney and is developing a unique blockchain energy trading platform. The platform is specifically designed to remove the regulatory and capital barriers to entry for smaller, innovative electricity retailers, so that they can focus on high standards of customer service.

“I’m one of many who’ve seen the slow rate of change and have moved into high-tech startups where the opportunities to disrupt the status quo are so much greater,” Hoy said. “Enosi’s blockchain energy trading play offers me the opportunity to help people to get their power prices down, and to really disrupt the slow-moving energy companies from the outside.”

“We’re delighted to welcome Stephanie to our Advisory Team. Her understanding of the utility businesses we are trying to disrupt will be invaluable as we develop our blockchain platform for public release in Q4 this year, ” Hoy added.
