Amazon’s electric fleet: how Rivian vans and routing software revolutionize logistics management

An in-depth article on CNBC, “How the job of Amazon delivery has changed with Rivian’s electric vans and routing software,” outlines the many changes that Amazon has made to its logistics management, with a particular emphasis on the benefits gained from electrifying its fleet of vans through its agreement with electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian to purchase 100,000 of their vehicles in February 2019.

Due to issues experienced by the manufacturer, which have prevented them from producing the number of vehicles originally expected, the deployment of these vehicles has been delayed from the initial estimate of 2025 to 2030, but the company already has one thousand fully electric Rivian vans specifically designed for logistics delivery operating in one hundred American cities, in the hands of the companies that Amazon works with and to whom it leases the vehicles on preferential conditions to reduce its dependence on large delivery companies. According to the article, these companies have already generated $26 billion since they began operating worldwide.

The anticipated problems with the autonomy of electric vans have not materialized: the approximately 240 kilometers that can be covered with a single charge are more than enough to enable a full delivery…
