Amazon’s plans to disrupt the healthcare industry continue apace

Amazon has launched RxPass, a flat-rate service for Amazon Prime users, who will be able to receive any of the more than 50 popular generic drugs sold by Amazon Pharmacy they have a valid prescription for.

The company continues to expand into a market that, for many households, especially those over a certain age, is very significant: medications. Amazon Pharmacy, created through the June 2018 acquisition of PillPack has allowed the company to become a supplier of all types of prescription drugs, which in the United States are served in a characteristic translucent orange bottle with a white safety cap and custom labeling, typically dispensed at large pharmacy chains such as CVS (24.5%), Walgreens (18%), Walmart (4.5%), Rite Aid (2.4%), etc. Amazon Pharmacy subscribers simply submit their prescriptions, and Amazon will deliver them a series of blister packs packaged according to the doses, with a clearly label indicating the day and time of each dose, and the corresponding pills, replacing the classic pill dispenser, thus reducing errors and improving adherence to treatment. Amazon could even consider incorporating pill reminders through home devices such as Alexa, in addition to PillPack’s own apps.
