An electric car for €100 euros a month: where do I sign?!

France has announced a €100-a-month electric car leasing program, pending the implementation date and the availability of EVs.

President Emmanuel Macron is fulfilling a campaign pledge to make the use of EVs possible for people who consider them expensive, having not yet understood the concept of total cost of ownership, or who still have some fears regarding their range. Other incentives include a subsidy of up to €6,000 for the purchase of EVs costing less than €47,000 or in exchange for scrapping a petrol or diesel car. Most drivers already spend more than €100 a month on petrol or diesel.

So far this year, only 12% of new vehicle sales in France were electric. In 2021, 322,000 units were sold, a low figure compared to other European countries that has led the country’s government to come up with new ways to make EVs more attractive.

In July 2020, German car dealers offered EVs practically free of charge, with the cost of the down payment and monthly payments covered by government subsidies.

This year’s hot summer, with heat waves, droughts and floods, could act as an incentive for more people to consider buying an EV as a way to reduce their contribution to emissions. With the leasing program, the French government aims, in addition to lowering the economic barriers…
