As the virtues of using generative algorithms for more and more tasks become evident, Big Tech is positioning itself, prompting a flood of initiatives.

Apple, which has largely kept silent since generative algorithms such as ChatGPT and others burst onto the scene, has announced plans to incorporate generative algorithms into all its products and services, from making Siri smarter (starting from a low bar) to creating playlists on Apple Music, and beyond.

The plan, led by senior executives John Giannandrea and Craig Federighi, aims to broaden the conversation about generative algorithms, which until now has been domination by Microsoft or Google, to include Apple, recognizing that the features it can offer could become differentiators for users. Since last July, the company has been developing Ajax, known internally as Apple GPT, which is simply its own large language model, and expected to cost the company more than a billion dollars a year to run, and which would serve as a new improved version of the ailing Siri.
