It was twenty years ago today…

I couldn’t resist using a line from one of my favorite Beatles albums to celebrate two decades of writing my blog (the Spanish version), and although I may not be old and 64 yet, as the photo from when I was 37 shows, things have moved on; aside from going grey, I’m a grandfather!

The photo on the left was the first one I used in this page in February 2003. It was taken by a photographer from Spanish business daily Expansión at a round table a few months before, and one of the few I found in digital format the day I considered designing my own page. I had only been back in Spain for three years, after having spent until 2000 doing my PhD in California, and I was already very active in the Spanish media panorama, with a weekly column in Expansión, and regular collaborations with many other media, largely through knowing more about the internet than the average academic, thanks to my PhD, and also, as I was told, because I explained things simply to journalists and, being an impartial academic, I had no axe to grind.

And so it was, on Friday, February 18, I saw the news that Google was acquiring Pyra Labs, the company behind Blogger. I thought that blogging was worth trying, and that if it worked, I could publish whatever I wanted without having to go through an editor or a newspaper.
