Meta makes money from inciting violence: how does it get away with it?

I said it at the time: India’s colossal elections would be a laboratory where we could measure the behavior of the actors involved, and there is one actor in particular who has clearly failed the test.

According to an exclusive by The Guardian, researchers from civil liberties groups sent Facebook ads that were clearly created using racist artificial intelligence, aimed at spreading disinformation and fomenting religious violence, which the company published without batting an eye.

Against a backdrop of growing hostility towards India’s Muslim population, the company agreed to the publication of advertisements inciting people to “burn the vermin”, intentionally written with ethno-supremacist language, while also others bearing Pakistan’s flag called on Muslims to “eliminate Hindus from India”.

The researchers of the report sent 22 ads in English, Hindi, Bengali and several other languages to Meta, of which 14 were approved immediately, while another three were published after minor adjustments that did not alter…
