OPINION: Managed well, feedlots can be the environmentally and ethically smart choice

Although grass-fed is touted as the environmentally and ethically best choice for beef eaters, feedlots often outperform on both fronts.

Since the 1970s, this very intensification has been accompanied by considerable environmental savings.

Innovations in veterinary science, animal nutrition and genetics have driven remarkable environmental gains in intensive systems as well.

Ultimately, there are many opportunities to improve management of both grass-fed and grain-fed beef producers.

We might prefer to think of cows munching away at grass on pasture, but grain (when combined with appropriate roughage) can make them happy, too.
