Don’t Forget About the Little Things

Sometimes the smallest gestures have the greatest impact on your employees

Managing employees will likely be the hardest responsibility you assume as an entrepreneur and while raises, performance reviews, and other large actions are important, sometimes the small gestures have the greatest impact. Whether it’s expressing your appreciation for an employee, giving them a personalized gift for completing a huge sale, or small christmas bonuses, the small things can be the difference between an employee who loves working for you or hates it.

I recently read an article on Medium titled I Was Pat McGovern’s Elf in which the author discussed how IDG’s chairman would visit nearly every employee in their organization around christmastime to chat and deliver year-end bonuses. Pat McGovern certainly wasn’t obligated to visit every person in his massive organization, but he made it a priority every December. Why? Because the little things matter. Receiving a visit from the chairman of your company every year to talk about your wife, kids, whatever is what makes you feel valued.

Don’t take this to mean you can ignore the big things, if you’re dramatically underpaying your employees, no amount of small gestures will make up for your inaction on big things. However, if you’re doing the big things right, it’s the small things that will make you company different from every other company.
