In an attempt to promote electric mobility in India, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India, has decided to permit sales of electric vehicles in India without a battery. This has been done to bring down the upfront cost of EVs since the most expensive component on an electric vehicle is the battery pack. Since a battery can account for more than 40 percent of an electric vehicle’s cost, this move is expected to boost the sales of electric vehicles in India by bringing down their upfront cost. It will also boost the battery industry in the country, bringing down the cost of EV batteries. The customer will have the option to retrofit an electric battery as per his requirements.

THE PITFALLS

While this move was appreciated by various EV makers there are some conspicuous issues that should be tended to.
