Life is a Golf Course
What if your desire to take a risk, make a change, or do more in life, is actually just an attitude problem—an issue of perception? What if you’re doing the best you can do, and any deviation from your current routine will only cause things to get worse? If you jump ship and life gets worse, you’ve taken a step backwards. That would be bad. Should you just stay put?
Absolutely not.
The supposition that the grass is never greener on the other side is bullshit—it’s a fallacy. Perception is reality. If you’re dissatisfied, why would you stay put? Do you really think there is no scenario in which you would ever feel truly happy, or at least more fulfilled than you feel now? Do you really think the world is that unforgiving? Don’t fall prey to the grass is greener fallacy. It’s only useful for one thing—settling.
If you were in an ice cream parlor and samples were free, would you forego the samples and just pick the flavor that sounded the best? No. You’d sample your top choice to make sure it was amazing—and if it wasn’t completely mind blowing, you would try at least a few other flavors just to make sure you were making the best choice. This is the process for choosing ice cream. Yet, when choosing our path in life, we often just settle into our current situation and assume there’s no better option, despite the constant nagging feeling that we’re fooling ourselves.
Sometimes the grass is not greener on the other side. But sometimes it is. If you’re not fulfilled, there’s a good chance that greener pastures lay elsewhere. Assuming the grass is never greener on the other side is an assumption based on fear and self doubt. The undeniable truth is that every patch of grass is different. Life is a massive golf course. There’s a patch of grass, somewhere, that is mind-blowingly good for you. You have to find that patch.
