Entropy Labs is committed to building a strong, interconnected and balanced team to support the projects we incubate. So we are growing, and in this post we want to shine the spotlight on two of our new members, Belsy Yuen and Sophia Wong. The following is a brief interview with each of them.

Belsy Yuen, Ph.D., Product and Engineering

Can you please detail your career history, important jobs, skills, projects you have been involved in?

I did mechanical engineering for my undergraduate and master’s degrees at the University of Bristol in the UK, and my Ph.D. at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. During my Ph.D. I met many postgraduates from different disciplines and I became involved with research in the CS department. This shaped the direction of my own research, which focused on computational simulations and statistical analysis the effects of nonlinear acoustics on aerosols. I was also heavily involved in producing materials for research grants and scholarships from the government and private sectors, including the Sir Edward Youde Fellowship. As a result, I was fortunate to be awarded significant scholarship funds to complete my studies. Outside of my core discipline, I completed the CFA level 1 exam and online courses on machine learning and cryptography.

After completing my Ph.D. in 2015 I joined IBM consulting. I worked on large system implementation projects for a year. Through a hackathon, I met some people from PricewaterhouseCoopers, and ended up joining the firm. At PwC, I worked on feature definition and development for two of their private blockchain B2B products.

What made you decide to join Entropy Labs?

I joined Entropy Labs because of the people. The team here cares deeply about technology and security. They set the standard as high as possible and they have the experience to achieve that and I have so much to learn from them. Personally, I believe that as we move towards Web 3.0, we will have the ability to impact the world we live in in a positive way. I am already contributing to this evaluation with our first project: Experta Network, a trusted environment for knowledge exchange. I love what we do and what we stand for at Entropy Labs.

Sophia Wong, Strategies and Operations

Can you tell the readers a little about your academic and professional background?

I graduated from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology with an undergraduate degree in Environmental Management and Technology. This three-year interdisciplinary program pushed my thinking boundaries. This is where I developed my understanding of the business world and learned how technology plays a key role in any business decisions.

After graduating, I became a consultant who specialised in sustainability at Ove Arup and then Ernst & Young. My clients were from the public and private sectors including Fortune 500 companies, and sought to tackle real-world problems such as climate change mitigations at corporate level. Many environmental problems are pressing issues and result from unsustainable business practices. Each problem is unique and it takes real collaboration to understand and address the impacts. By providing visibility into the near- to mid-term future, I helped clients plan and allocate resources efficiently in order to exceed stakeholders‘ expectations.

What made you decide to join Entropy Labs?

I knew Entropy Labs would be the right fit for me when I learned about their core value which is empowering people with technology. Our team loves to research and develop technologically feasible solutions that anticipate our customers’ needs. I belief our core value differentiates us from other companies and allow us to treat users and the wider community with respect.
