What is Video Blackout Management and How can OTT Players Use it?

The global reach of OTT has opened up varied options for creators to get their content distributed the world over.

The global OTT market is poised to grow by US $314.65 billion during 2021–2025, accelerating at a CAGR of 22.58% during the forecast period.

The success of OTT has also meant that more players have entered the space to deliver that content to the world. This means that one piece of content can have different rights owners in different parts of the world.

For instance, a live sports event can be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video in the USA, while it could be on Disney+ in other parts of the world. So, if an Amazon Prime Video subscriber from the USA is on holiday in a country in Asia in which the provider doesn’t have rights to the sporting property, the user won’t be able to stream the content.

Blackouts aren’t restricted to live events. There are also licensing deals for movies and shows that aren’t global and could be for specific markets. So, if you’re in the space that is looking to run shows after acquiring licenses too, blackout video management is of interest for you.

Another form of blackout for viewers could be in the form of PPV content on an OTT app. This could also help you increase monetisation by allowing the user to watch the content for a few minutes before the blackout, which can be erased after the viewer buys the required pack to stream it.

How to replace streamed video content during a blackout?

If you’ve got content on your app that falls under the blackout category which can’t run in a certain market, you can run an error message to tell the viewer why he/she can’t stream the content.

To make sure you don’t lose the viewer to another OTT app, you can also give options of content similar to the one the user wanted. This allows the viewer to browse through similar options and stay on the app.

It’s easy to replace blacked-out content with secondary streams. Providers like Enveu have tools that efficiently show up substitute segments to the consumer. Localised blackouts can also be inserted into the video streams without adding workflow.

This means that the creator doesn’t need to bother with any of the tech bits, and just focus on the content.
