There is no such a Thing as Sustainable Palm Oil

Oil palm is the 3rd largest cultivated oil crop behind soy and rapeseed. In 2017, it was covering 18.7 million ha. That’s a lot of soccer fields and world cup! In 1980, 4.5 million tons of palm oil was produced while in 2014 this number reached 70 millions tons. An increase of fifteen fold in 34 years. And this number is predicted to grow even more in the next years. This rise in production and demand for the palm oil is correlated with the increasing number of people living in the cities. This middle class doesn’t take the time to cook and usually buy ready to eat…
