Humayun Sheikh and Toby Simpson are the founders of the Fetch.ai, an ambitious project which seeks to create a self-learning blockchain network that fosters economic activity between off-chain AI agents. They joined us on Epicenter to talk about their vision for bringing a decentralized digital world to life.

Fetch.ai is a project introducing a grand vision of creating a decentralised digital world, in which useful economic entity can take place. The participants of that world are the “autonomous economic agents” — be it machines, devices, sensors, cameras, delivery robots, cars, or humans —which all connect to the Fetch network, communicating and transacting with each other. Fetch aims to build a virtual world connecting these entities, allowing them to autonomously discover economic partners that would find their services and data mutually valuable.

To this purpose, Humayun and Toby claim to have found solutions to designing a useful Proof of Work system and building a scalable blockchain. The Fetch team have also introduced a concept of an agent class bridging the existing computer systems and devices with Fetch and allowing them to exist in this new ecosystem. There’s millions of transactions, very low value happening at a very high frequency, within an economic framework which is not governed by a central organisation. We want to bring cryptocurrency to the real world, explains Humyan.

What’s the practical application of their project? One of the areas where the founders see Fetch network particularly applicable in the short-term is transport — a system full of moving parts, where efficient utilisation of resources is nowhere near where it could be. Another obvious area is supply chain, but Humayun and Toby expect to see lots of other interesting developments introduced by the community — in terms of building agents, bringing the moving parts together, generating economic value and experimenting with what might be possible on the network— once the mainnet launches next year.
