With ongoing advancements in the gaming industry, the terms that are earning a lot of media attention and are promising tremendous growth are Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR).

Let’s have a look over the significance of these two terms in the following context:

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality (VR) is a virtually computer-generated simulation of a real-life environment that brings real life-like experience to users. It works over a language called VRML (Virtual Reality Modelling Language) which is useful in creating a series of images and specifies what types of interactions are possible for them.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality (AR) works over a technology that layers computer-generated enhancements aloft an existing reality to make it more profound via its ability to interact with it. Further, it is used to develop apps over mobile devices to blend digital components into the real world in such a manner that they mutually enhance one another. Further, it has numerous applications in the real world like display of score overlays on telecasted sports games, 3D emails, photos, text messages over the mobile devices.

When AR and VR made its presence?

AR made its first functional presence as immersive mixed reality tool for users in the early 1990s. It is starting with the Virtual Fixtures system developed at the U.S. Air Force’s Armstrong Laboratory in the year 1992. Majorly, the first commercial augmented reality experiences used in the entertainment and gaming industries. But in a short time, it penetrated more areas like education, construction, information management and organizing distant meetings.

VR made its initial presence in the early 1860s, when French Dramatist, Antonin Artaud made spectators believe that illusion was not distinct from reality. That brought up the first references to the more modern concept of virtual reality via science fiction.

Following this realization, by the year 1980, the term “virtual reality” became quite popular among all the people of the digital world. Since after, Jaron Lanier, one of the modern pioneers of the field founded the company VPL Research in 1985, many VR devices invented like Data Glove, the EyePhone, and the Audio Sphere.

After that, this development took no look back, and by 2016, at least 230 companies were developing VR-related products which are revolutionizing the gaming industry majorly.

How these two are duos influencing Gaming Industry?

The two duos AR and VR collectively are achieving those things that once seemed impossible. Video game creators are working on these two majors to bring players into the worlds of games. Over the years, innovations have added 360-degree views of more realistic environments and haptic feedback through controls. Since AR and VR are taking this a step further and thereby bringing excitement among the game-freaks.

Augmented reality that is comparatively gaining more popularity than VR serves as a perfect platform bringing the best experience to players via the Smartphone devices.

Though this technology is still developing phase, there are some limitations to VR gaming systems. Like video games, where designers are still struggling to create a flawless virtual world that properly orients direction, adjusts in perfect real-time as per the movements made by the gamers. It is expected that AR and VR will become mainstream in the next few years. It is allowing players to manipulate a game on a screen with the wave of a glove equipped with motion sensors. And further bringing VR world in which a player moves through a virtual game environment while remaining sedentary in the real world.

Summing up to these aspects, it can be inferred that the speed with which these two duos are developing. The future of AR and VR will hold something different, bringing flexibility in gaming technology.
