In Malthus’ theory, the mathematical concept of “mortality” is represented by a constant “death rate” (d) within a population, which, when combined with a constant “birth rate” (b), determines the overall population growth rate (r) using the equation:
dN/dt = rN, where “N” is the population size and “r” is the intrinsic rate of increase (b — d).

Key points about Malthus’ mortality math:

Exponential Growth:
This equation describes exponential population growth when the birth rate exceeds the death rate (r > 0).

“r” as the Malthusian Parameter:
The “r” value, calculated by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate, is often referred to as the “Malthusian parameter”.

Assumptions:
Malthus assumed that both birth and death rates remain relatively constant over time, leading to a simple exponential growth model.

Important aspects of the Malthusian model:

No Carrying Capacity:
Unlike more complex population models, the basic Malthusian model does not incorporate a carrying capacity, meaning the population is predicted to grow indefinitely until checked by external factors like famine or disease.

Example Calculation:
If a population has a birth rate of 0.02 (2% per year) and a death rate of 0.01 (1% per year), then the Malthusian parameter (r) would be 0.01 (0.02–0.01).
This means the population would grow at a rate of 1% per year, assuming constant birth and death rates.

Population growth is exponential, according to the Malthusian growth model, while the growth of the food supply or other resources is linear, which eventually reduces living standards to the point of triggering a population decline.

Malthusian Catastrophe

AKA a Malthusian trap, population trap, Malthusian check, Malthusian crisis, Point of Crisis, or Malthusian crunch.

Despite the criticisms against it, the Malthusian argument remains a major discourse based on which national and international environmental regulations are promoted.

Our species has so far managed to outrun Malthusian Catastrophes by employing technology. Of course, this has also increased our dependence on technology.

Nature has a way of batting last and our infrastructure has recently experienced significant damage, crop yields have been diminishing, and conflicts over resources including habitable land have increased.

The diet, exercise, and lifestyle that supported our growth and expansion over the planet are no longer available in many places, especially places of affluence and power.

Microplastics accumulate in our brains and testes.

Forever Chemicals are found in every food source.

Background radiation increased along with the proliferation of radioactive waste.
