Secret smile
My smile couldn’t have been wider. Like a secret hidden inside my helmet meant for just me but it wanted to get out.
Those of you who’ve been there will know what I mean. Those moments when the curves of the road beneath say “c’mon, just a bit faster”.
So we do.

Behind the visor of my helmet I rolled down on the redwood lined road. Shafts of light blinked on and off in my eyes. Hypnotic.
Over the roar of bikes I might have heard the ocean just over the hill but this was our moment not to be interrupted by anyone, by anything.
Down into the hollow we rolled, twisting this way and that. Eyes up and our bodies leaning into each turn. The painted stripes and roadsigns a blur.
It wasn’t long before I found myself laughing. Out loud to anyone who could hear me. That fucking crazy laugh you get when the soul is tickled and the mind disconnects from the rest of you.
Gawd I love being out on that bike, any bike. In the turn. On the straight. Beyond earshot.
That’s when I glance in the mirror and wonder —
Why go home?
