I’m excited to announce that we’re recruiting for a Co-founder & CTO! After spending nearly a decade in hospital administration, I decided that I no longer wanted to be a pawn in the current healthcare system, which is failing both patients and caregivers. I spent months interviewing doctors from across the country and realized that we can leverage technology to help people receive affordable, high-quality primary care at scale. But, as a non-technical CEO, I need a partner in crime to help build this startup into a sustainable and scalable business. Keep in mind, healthcare is not for the faint of heart. It’s obnoxiously complex and we fully expect to run into myriad issues along the way. But, if you have the problem-solving gene and want to improve the lives of millions, this could be the most rewarding role of your career.

We’re going to build this company from the ground up and challenge Big Healthcare. Equal connects businesses and their employees to patient-centric doctors that offer primary care on a monthly membership basis. Also known as direct primary care (DPC), this alternative is already benefiting individuals and doctors across the country, but we want to scale access so millions more can live richer, healthier lives.

About You

You have a track record as a full-stack engineer with a keen eye for design. In other words, you can build a product that flat out works, looks amazing, and feels fantastic to the customer. As CTO of Equal, you’ll lead all technical and product aspects of the business and help us grow into the leading primary care technology product in the U.S.

As our team grows, you will have direct oversight of product and engineering and should have deep expertise in developing and leading these areas. That includes coaching team members, allocating resources, and setting expectations.

But underneath your tough technical exterior, your interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence make you the kind of badass leader every tech company wants: a combination of raw product and engineering skill with business acumen. This will come in handy as the company grows and more of your time is spent on recruiting and managing other team members, helping me make critical decisions related to strategy and operations, and keeping a pulse on overall organizational health.

The overarching goal for your role will be aligning the company’s technology with its strategic direction. But as an early stage startup, I need you to be a true partner that will help address everything from product to sales to fundraising. You will advise, challenge, and refine my objectives and help set the course for Equal’s future success.

This role is for you if you:

  • Architect and frame strategic roadmaps in various time windows (now/next/future), with contingencies and variables clearly articulated.
  • Bring technology products through the full cycle of development from concept to reality.
  • Love building (being a contributor), but also love communicating, leading, and managing.
  • Recruit amazing engineers, product owners, and other technical roles and love raising the bar.
  • Want to change the broken healthcare system in the United States.
  • Don’t shy away from a challenge and love a good David vs. Goliath story.

Technical Requirements

  • 5+ years experience of full-stack software development preferably in a fast-paced environment with commercially successful products/services
  • Demonstrated results in scaling technology for growth
  • Supervise system infrastructure to ensure functionality and efficiency
  • Experience with — or willingness to learn fast — the following technologies, frameworks, languages, etc: Ruby on Rails, AWS, Heroku, React and JavaScript, and CSS.

As a critical part of Equal’s founding team, you will be compensated with a generous equity package. Salary will also be included as part of the compensation, but because we’re an early stage startup, it will be fairly modest to start out. We’re really excited about attacking the multi-billion dollar opportunity in front of us. As we hit major milestones, your salary will be adjusted to better reflect your awesomeness.
