What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is awareness, mindfulness is consciousness, and mindfulness is being present.

Mindfulness puts you in a better position to make changes in your life and grow. Mindfulness is a practice wherein a person observes the present reality for what it is without overthinking the future or brooding over the past.

“Life is a dance. Mindfulness is witnessing that dance” — Amit Ray.

A lot of times, we are so focused on timelines and the bustle of life that we forget to sit with ourselves and pause to reflect on the present state of our being. If we don’t know what we are; how will we take steps to align ourselves with who we want to be?

Why Should You Be Mindful?

It is imperative to calm our raging minds daily and focus on centering our attention on the present moment. In the absence of mindfulness, we could find ourselves slowly getting out of touch with our personal identities and losing our sense of groundedness. Mindfulness also promotes feelings of peace and calmness alongside other things like:

1. It calms your anxiety

Anxiety is typically characterized by ravaging thoughts about a supposed future occurrence. Life seems to rush at us in a hurry and swallow us like crashing waves to a boat at sea. Mindfulness promotes a sense and being of serenity and calmness, and helps boost focus and concentration. This is very beneficial for alleviating anxiety in the long run.

2. It helps you become a better person

When you intentionally practice mindfulness, you become aware of yourself, including your strengths and weaknesses. This newfound and intensive realization becomes a catalyst for your self-help journey. By inculcating mindfulness, you better understand things you want to change about yourself, where they stem from, and knowing that is a great pointer to how you can start to work on them.

3. It helps you realize who you are

As previously noted, mindfulness helps people become remarkably aware of themselves, including their behavioral patterns, true life paths, and what their unique life journeys are. Being mindful opens you up to many realities about yourself that you were probably previously unaware of. You start taking cognisance of the state of your life and also aids in showing ways to move forward or backtrack as is necessary.

4. It increases your productivity

Knowledge of yourself and the truth of your present circumstances gives you the opportunity and leverage to change what is no longer serving you. This includes unhealthy patterns that make you unproductive, what causes these patterns to persist, and potential ways that you could move on from them.

5. It builds character

In line with the themes of self-awareness and self-realization with peace, serenity, and wellbeing, consistent mindfulness has been shown to build character and make us more wholesome and healthy as people.

Ways to become more mindful

  1. Practicing Breath Work.
  2. Meditation.
  3. Exercise.
  4. Conscious Evaluation Of Ourselves.
  5. Making Intentional Decisions To Reflect Before Acting.
  6. Reiki.

When you reflect on and observe the world, you realize that there is a growing, jarring amount of hate, a smelly spirit of perilous competitiveness amongst human beings, and how we constantly seem to be at war with ourselves. This is dangerous, on all fronts, to humanity.

Mindfulness is one way to center ourselves and come back to a recognition of our actions.
