Participating in the Erasmus+ program was a transformative journey that allowed me to explore a world of emotional intelligence (EQ) and mindfulness in youth work. This training course, designed to shape the understanding and behavior of youth workers, NGO members, and volunteers, emphasized the importance of EQ and mindfulness in youth work, as well as in personal life. In this article, I will take you through my inspiring Erasmus+ experience and highlight its impact on my perspective.

Erasmus+: A Catalyst for Change

Erasmus+ is an initiative that empowers participants to broaden their horizons through international experiences, offering educational and cultural enrichment. My journey began with this program, where I found myself enrolled in a diverse and dynamic group of participants from different countries. This, was one of the most interesting aspects of my Erasmus+ experience, the opportunity to meet and collaborate with people from different cultures. We all shared a common passion and a desire to improve our understanding of emotional intelligence and mindfulness and the diverse group of participants brought a wealth of perspectives and experiences to our training course.

Experiencing Nature’s Tranquility

Many of our activities were conducted in nature, which added a unique dimension to our training. Activities such as meditation, yoga, and mindfulness in natural settings (in the forest or next to the river) allowed us to connect with the environment and find inner peace. The sounds of the forest, the feel of the earth, and the fresh air all contributed to a significant sense of well-being. These natural surroundings provided a perfect backdrop for our journey of self-discovery and inner peace.

Understanding Emotional Intelligence

One of the key elements of our training course was the exploration of emotional intelligence. We dived into the five components of EQ: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Through interactive workshops, discussions, and experiential learning, we uncovered the profound impact that EQ has on our ability to connect with and guide the youth effectively.

As youth workers, our role is not just to mentor and educate but also to support other young people in their emotional development. By improving our own emotional intelligence, we discovered how to better understand and relate to the challenges that the youth we work with face on a daily basis. It became evident that developing our EQ was a crucial tool for creating positive and lasting impacts in their lives.

Mindfulness: A Powerful Tool for Stress Management

In addition to EQ, mindfulness was another essential component of our training. We learned that being present in the moment and cultivating a non-judgmental awareness of our thoughts and emotions is invaluable for both youth workers and the young people they serve. Mindfulness equips us with the skills to handle stress, anxiety, and burnout effectively.

Through mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing, and mindful walking, we experienced how these techniques can help us manage our own stress levels. Moreover, we discovered that these practices could be easily integrated into our youth work, offering young people strategies to cope with the pressures of modern life.

Conclusions

My Erasmus+ experience was not just about acquiring new knowledge and skills; it was also an amazing journey of personal growth. The training course encouraged self-reflection and self-improvement, inspiring a commitment to lifelong learning. It reminded me that in order to be an effective youth worker, I must continuously develop and evolve. Participating in the Erasmus+ training course “EQ and Mindfulness in youth work” was a remarkable journey. It equipped me with invaluable tools and insights that have the potential to transform both my approach to youth work and my personal life. The understanding of emotional intelligence and the practice of mindfulness are not only tools for professional growth but also keys to fostering a more empathetic and supportive community for young people. The Erasmus+ program has truly opened doors to new horizons and a brighter future for youth work.
