Kashmir Flower Seller
The entire palette of embroidery threads in one magnificent artwork.
When in Kashmir, each morning, Steve McCurry travelled with flower sellers on the lake Dal. During one of these morning rituals, this photo was taken.
It took the entire palette of embroidery threads to recreate this photo magic in the embroidery.
About motif
Kashmir was a dangerous place in the late Nineties, with atrocities such as the kidnapping and murder keeping the region in the news, but McCurry wanted to picture life away from the violence as well. His photographs of the Kashmiri people, such as the one above of a man with henna-dyed beard and moustache, reflect there perseverance and resilience.
