As autumn settles in, so does the much-anticipated Frieze art fair. This year marks its 20th anniversary, and while some may argue it’s showing its age, there’s no denying that the galleries seem to be holding back their best works for the upcoming Paris + Fair. With a few exceptions, Frieze 2023 was a bit underwhelming. However, the real gem of the event was the sculpture park in Regent’s Park, curated by the visionary Fatos Üstek, which was a breath of fresh air in the contemporary art world. Let’s dive into the highlights.

Anna-Eva Bergman at Perrotin — Modern Women Section

Anna-Eva Bergman, N°30–1963 Panorama, 1963, Oil and metal sheet on canvas, 35.04" x 45.67" (89 cm x 116 cm)

Anna-Eva Bergman, a Norwegian abstract expressionist, left a significant mark on the art world with her abstract paintings inspired by nature and abstracted motifs. Born in Stockholm in 1909 to a Norwegian mother and a Swedish father, she honed her craft at the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo and the School of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 1958, Bergman unveiled a series of works that introduced archetypal forms inspired by Scandinavian nature, such as stone, moon, star, and tree. These forms have a magnetic quality that’s utterly fascinating.
