Sean Scully at Houghton Hall // Straight Lines in a Rounded Nature
The Dublin-born artist Sean Scully imposes straight lines in the rounded nature. On another occasion, when reassembling found wood or metal or painting blocks on canvas arises as an attempt, an intention. A magical dialogue emerges in any case. Scully lines guide us through environments to hand us over to the trees and the land. The landscape. One stops and enjoys a necessary pause. There is so much to take into when simplicity reigns. A bird might sit on it for a while. Who is watching whom? And then we continue this pilgrimage path in the Houghton gardens from one setting to another to another, from one experience to another. The awakening begins.
Last Sunday, 23 April, it opened a major solo exhibition that showcases the full range of the artist’s sculpture, taking over the grounds and historic interiors of Houghton Hall in Norfolk. The artist will also show a significant group of paintings and works on paper in the Hall and Contemporary Gallery. Sean Scully at Houghton Hall — Smaller Than The Sky will run until 29 October.
