With the sons of the late Sir George Calvert intent on building the Maryland Colony in America — see Kiplin Hall #1: The Man Who Founded a US State and Lied About its Name — the family’s primary residence of Kiplin Hall in Yorkshire, England, passed into the care of the wider family.

Over the generations, its owners included a British Consul to Livorno, Italy; a merchant trading in Europe and Asia; and an Admiral of the Fleet, all adding to the accumulating furniture, paintings, books, and keepsakes.

However, with the estate situated in the wilds of Yorkshire, far from the capital or the hubs of expanding industry, the Hall was not necessarily used as the primary home. This saved it from major rebuilding, as can be seen from the drone-view video, link below. The only addition of size was made in 1820 when an airy library was added, and which kept being changed until 1892 when it was remodelled in Jacobean style to suit the house.

The ladies also left their mark, especially those of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who insisted on learning the artisan skills of the Arts & Crafts…
