How to get out of that rut..

Getting stuck in a rut may be a phrase that doesn’t translate globally. In short it means you aren’t moving forwards, or backwards.
There are plenty of times I get stuck in a rut. Either I’m tired, stressed or overwhelmed by the size of my to-do list. It is easy in these situations to procrastinate — to keep going over and over the same things as you get stuck deeper into that rut.
Sometimes the best way to get out of your rut is to do something, anything — just to get moving.
The first step to get unstuck is to accept that your next action is not the final action. The next thing you do may not make the to-do list vanish or it may not solve the larger goal but it gets you moving.
The next step is to do something, anything.
This post is a perfect example. I am writing this to get myself out of a rut (and I hope, help you out too!) — there is so many times I can review my Google Analytics today and there are no new stories on Techmeme in the past 3 minutes so I have to stop prevaricating and move forward.
If I write, publish and share this post I hope it will unlock my incentive to get on and tackle some other things that need my attention. On the face of it, I won’t have ticked off any more tasks on the list and I won’t have completed any of the larger goals I am working on.
But actually it will. It has got me out of that rut so I can move forward and address the things that matter more.
Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu put it more succinctly. “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”
So take that step. Write a blog post, Tweet or pick up the ‘phone. Heck you could even just comment on this blog post.
Do something and get out of that rut!
[I’m resisting the urge to labour this post and just publish so I can move forward.]
