Rocky Teodoro has been many things: news editor, lifestyle writer, technical writer, and public relations manager.

In all his endeavors, he knew exactly how writing can be malleable. Working in PR, he learned how to pique interest. In being a ghostwriter for a prominent lifestyle columnist, he learned how to set the mood. Being a lifestyle writer has taught him how to flesh out an article topic. As a technical writer, he learned how to write clearly and with no frills.

As a news editor for S&P Global, he has now learned how to be a teacher. Guiding countless writers and employees through various workshops, he condenses his years of experience into two essentials and three writing tips. Speaking in a webinar titled Business Writing for Impact last December 3, he reveals these essential tips in writing.

“Before you pick up your pen, or before you open your laptop, you need to know your reader so you can tailor-fit your writing,” Rocky says. Not all kinds of writing can appeal to all readers. You have to know your audience; know how you can best convey your message. That means you may have to change your tone, style, and word choice. Are you sending a report to your boss? Be as concise as possible. Are you working on a review? Be as descriptive as you can. There are so many ways to write — you just have to know which way can make the most impact.

Being concise is also a very valuable skill. With how short a reader’s attention span can be, you have to go in with guns blazing. Everyone can go on and on about a certain topic, but a proficient writer knows that you have to trim the fat to get a smoother and sharper flow. “Edit without remorse,” He bluntly puts.

Lastly, Rocky knows how writing is an immersive experience — be considerate and put yourself in the shoes of your reader. Be forward-thinking by addressing needs and being proactive. “Don’t merely ask questions, or report problems and propose a solution. This will set you apart from the others. You will stand out as a problem-solver,” he advises.
