Art is more than just the grand paintings we see on museum walls. It is not as technical or as rigid as we’d believed it to be. In fact, art can be personal and freeing. As much as it is a talent, it can also be a way to express yourself. Not only do you gain a skill, but you also bring beauty into the world.

An often-overlooked dimension of art is its power to bring about self-reflection and peace. Art therapy has been proven to be effective in dealing with trauma, depression, and illness. But more than just physical injuries, art can help you deal with experiences and emotions.

So what exactly is meditative art? It’s not some niche subsection of the art world, but simply when art becomes a way for you to channel introspection and emotion. It’s when you access a meditative state of mind through your creative process, connecting not only with your inner thoughts but with your spirituality as well.

Some consider meditative art to be a spiritual practice, but this doesn’t mean you have to paint religious symbols. Getting in touch with your spirituality just means that you are opening your mind — and your soul — to other possibilities. Moreover, meditative art can help you let go of your anxieties and apprehensions as well. It allows you to focus on the bright side and utilize your art to free yourself from heavy burdens.

Art is a time machine, too. It can help you sift through your past and pinpoint the root causes of the problems you face today. It allows you to reflect on who you really are and who you want to be in the future. It allows you to process events and emotion in a way that you don’t really let yourself to.

Finally, in meditative art there is acceptance. You center yourself to focus on the truly important things in life. You accept who you are, and who you are not. You accept that there are things you cannot control.

So what are you waiting for? Art does not need to be daunting or formal. There are so many mediums you can choose. Are you in the mood for splashing some watercolor around? Or maybe a quiet afternoon of scrapbooking is fulfilling for you? No matter what, art can be whatever you want it to be.
