Tickets for Estonia’s XI European Sauna Marathon go on sale 6 January at 10am
..but will be limited to 120 teams.
Organisers of the XI European Sauna Marathon, which takes place on 15 February in the Estonian winter capital of Otepää, have just revealed that tickets will go on sale from 10am on 6 January at Piletilevi.ee.
This time, however, tickets will be limited to 120 teams (of four people each) so anyone wishing to take part in the increasingly popular event will need to put a note in their calendar and buy their tickets as fast as they can.
“Despite the increasing popularity, fewer teams will be allowed on the course next year,” explains Jorma Riivald, Head of the Otepää Cultural Center. “We want to make the event even more enjoyable for sauna enthusiasts so that everyone can enjoy as many warm saunas as they can.”
Otepää, the winter capital of Estonia that hosts the event each year, is receiving new investment so all the action will take place away from the town centre, which will be under construction. Instead, registration on the day will take place at Otepää Gymnasium Sports Hall (Mäe 23, Otepää) between 9.00–11.30 a.m where participants can be get changed before heading to the start line outside at the time they are given.
Each team must take their tickets with them to the start and then fill in their registration sheet in return for their competition wristband and orienteering chips, which are used to check in and out of each sauna on the course. However, orienteering will be done using paper maps again next year as the rolling landscape of south Estonia didn’t work well with the phone app this year. Every team must also bring €35 in cash as a deposit for the tracking wristband.
The finish line will be at the same location until 5.30 p.m when the race closes and, as is traditional, soup will be served for all participants before awards are announced. The prizes for first, second, and third place will be selected from all registered teams that complete the course, along with some bonus prizes. The sauna owners will also be able to give out their own special prizes to their favourite team.
After the race has finished, the afterparty will take place at Otepää nightclub Comeback where participants can dance the night away with Estonian superstar 2 Quick Start. The entrance is free from 10–11 p.m. with a competition wristband.
The European Sauna Marathon is a fun, orienteering game. Each team of four is assigned a list of saunas to track down around Otepää and must visit them all as fast as possible. Team members must be in the sauna hot room for at least 3 minutes, as well as visit ice holes and hot tubes. In order to do that the team must have a car.
The European Sauna Marathon is organized by Otepää Cultural Center, Otepää Rural Municipality, sauna owners of Otepää area and volunteers. Radio stations Ring FM and Sky Plus will be there to cover the event, in addition to international media that are expected to attend. The sponsors are night club Comeback and… this Estonian Saunas blog that you are reading.

The Estonian Saunas blog is run by Anni and Adam, explorers and exporters of Estonian saunas. We’re sponsoring the European Sauna Marathon and will also have one of our own special saunas there for everyone taking part.
Our global online store will be launching soon, but we export to the UK at EstonianSaunas.co.uk and also have two saunas in Estonia that are open to visitors and were created with the best of Estonian design and technology — our Tallinn smoke sauna and our Tallinn Airbnb apartment with an e-sauna. We’re also shareholders in HUUM, Estonia’s top designer of sauna stoves and heaters.
In addition to our blog, you can follow our own adventures exploring and exporting Estonian saunas on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. You can also join our Facebook group for fans of Estonian saunas. Email us at email@example.com.
