She appeared at my table: “Steven. I need your help.”
“Katherine,” and nodded to the empty seat, “Not sure what I can do.”

She sat: “I know what you do.”
“What’s that?”

“The AirStream, the travel …”
“I live alone, government stipend …”

I knew her.
She looked tired: “Brian hits me.”
I nodded & listened.

“Can you help?”
Shrugging: “Probably not.”
Sighing, she left.

We had different definitions of “help.”

War kills everything in you.
Except love.

She shivered when I walked into the funeral home. I walked over and whispered in her ear: “What did you expect, Katherine?”
