Charles tells us why EthCC provides a great springboard for ideas to help Ledger best cater for clients and how he feels it is their duty to support the growth of the Ethereum community.

Welcome to EthCC Voices, the Medium Series from the speakers of EthCC[3].

Taking place on 3–5 March 2020, the conference organised by Ethereum France is regarded as Europe’s leading Ethereum conference for the community by the community!

Today, I got to talk to Charles Guillemet, CTO of Ledger, on Ledger’s involvement in the Ethereum community, how to make the crypto ecosystem more trustworthy, and the introduction of their new solution, Ledger Vault.

Let’s delve straight into our conversation…

Hi Charles, tell us a bit about yourself and your background…

“In 2017, I joined Ledger as Chief Security Officer after 10 years of working in the Cryptography & Hardware Security sector. Since 2019, I have been the Chief Technology Officer.

I started my career at Tiempo, an innovative startup in the Secure Hardware industry, where I was designing the security of EAL5+ secure integrated circuits. After this, I worked as Technical Manager in an Information Technology Security Evaluation Facility (ITSEF) at the CEA (French research organisation in the areas of energy, defense and security, information technologies and health technologies.

I also have a Masters of Science in Cryptography & Security at the Engineering School ENSIMAG, with a Major Cryptography and Security (Valedictorian), where I used to be a Lecturer.”

Why did you want to be a part of EthCC 3 & what do you plan to do at the conference?

“As the CTO of Ledger and its former CSO, my main concern remains how we could make the crypto ecosystem more trustworthy. As a speaker, I will aim at generating awareness among the community about the security of endpoints and how digital assets custody solutions are key to accelerate mass adoption and institutionalisation.

Ethereum remains one of the most important players in the crypto ecosystem. Since our launch, Ledger has been involved in Ethereum community development. All the more, DeFi projects are surging. In such a context, ERC-20 security has never been so critical.

During my keynote I will introduce our institutional solution, the Ledger Vault. Ledger Vault is a multi-authorization cryptocurrency wallet management solution enabling financial institutions to build digital asset operations at speed and scale. I will show how Ledger Vault can solve many problems institutions can encounter because of the new rules set by digital assets. Ledger Vault is a multi-authorization cryptocurrency wallet management solution enabling financial institutions to build digital asset operations at speed and scale. It provides an end-to-end security infrastructure for firms to completely manage and control their assets by allowing them to securely store and trade those currencies. Ledger Vault enables institutions to have their funds readily available and highly secure, simultaneously.”

How has EthCC impacted your community so far?

“It is key for us to remain connected to coin/protocol communities. Ethereum is probably the strongest and most lively coin community today. It’s our duty to support the community and to keep pace with all the new changes. Being a keynote speaker at EthCC means being at the centre of the community, which is a great way to have new ideas. To sum it up, it is an excellent means to come up with new services and features for our clients.”

What cryptocurrency trends do you think will be big in 2020?

“The needs of security remain a key stake to accelerate cryptocurrency mass adoption. Everybody will probably talk about DeFi, Eth 2.0, the potential bullrun, and how asset managers and traditional banks are entering the market which will drive institutionalisation.”
