What Is The Graph?

“My name is Tegan Kline and I am the co-founder and business lead of Edge Node, and Edge Node is the team behind The Graph. So The Graph is decentralized indexing and query protocol. And you know, because The Graph is decentralized, it belongs to everyone, and no one. The graph is powering most of the applications in DeFi and the broader Web3 space today. So you can kind of think of The Graph like an open API that makes it easy for developers to build on blockchains. And the analogy that I like to use is kind of what Google does for the web, The Graph does for blockchains. We’re really committed to ensuring that blockchains become the future of the Internet, and we really believe in decentralized open source technology.”

What Else Should BUIDLers Know?

“Anyone from anywhere can come and build applications really easily. And seamlessly, you know, no matter what working class they come from any walk of life, they’re able to kind of come in and build easily. And we want to make building an application on blockchains, as easy as it is to build a website today in Web2. We index and query basically any piece of the stack. So we can index and query applications that live on blockchains, as well as layer twos. And we just did an announcement around the layer one blockchains we were thinking to expand to. And so The Graph is really here to kind of unite the Web3 ecosystem and make it really easy to access data from any piece of the stack. If you’re a developer, you can go to thegraph.com and find the developer documents and spin up a subgraph for the applications you’re building.”

What Else Are You Excited About?

“2020, I think that was really the year of DeFi; we saw a huge boom, a ton of innovation. And now we’re kind of seeing another wave in 2021 of DeFi. So I think we will have a lot better tools in the decentralized finance space. But also I think that that is going to transcend into Web3. And we will see more and more innovation in Web3. And when I say Web3, I mean the decentralized internet. And so I foresee, you know, a lot more developers, now that we have tools, so that developers can build on decentralized infrastructure like The Graph. We’re seeing more and more developers come from Facebook, Google, Uber, you know, now that they can build on this decentralized infrastructure they’re moving over because the internet wasn’t created so that people could sell ads or monetize people’s data. And I think decentralized infrastructure really allows for endless possibilities where you don’t have to engage in that kind of activity. And instead, you can kind of help empower the ecosystem and the individual!”
