Client Diversity on Ethereum Network
Take the survey & make your voice heard!
As a decentralized network, Ethereum blockchain relies on peer-to-peer networking. Each peer uses an Ethereum client to be able to contribute to the network. It adds a huge responsibility on the majority client team and also makes the network vulnerable.
Client Diversity, one of the important attributes required to keep the network resilient, had been in discussion among the Proof of Work client providers. The importance of client diversity was also communicated prior to the launch of the beacon chain because if more than 1/3 of validators are offline, epochs can no longer be finalized.
Earlier, an Ethereum node runner was concerned with either a Proof of Work client or a Beacon chain client provider. However, with the switch to Proof of Stake consensus with The Merge upgrade four months ago, it is mandatory for a for any node operator to run both Execution & Consensus Layer clients simultaneously to participate in the network. Obviously, maintaining a right balance of client diversity becomes the highest priority for the Ethereum Community.
To support decentralization and promote client diversity, the Ethereum Cat Herders invited every client team on PEEPanEIP Know Your Client series to share information about their respective client features and available support. We briefly shared information on available Execution and Consensus clients on The Merge Community Call.
Now is the time to assess how far along we are and what can be done by the client providers to encourage users to choose other clients to create a more healthy client distribution.
