Changsha, the capital of the Hunan province, has always been at the center of innovation and Academia. In antiquity, Yuele Academy was one of the 4 legendary places for education, where the renowned Confucian scholars Zhu Xi and Zhang Shi lectured. Today, it continues the tradition with Hunan University and the National Supercomputing Center in Changsha, two bright beacons of intellectual exploration. Changsha is renewing it’s motto as a visionary city ahead of its time, and blockchain is prominent in its future.
ETCLabs was invited to speak at the 2019 Chinese and Foreign Blockchain Leaders Summit . The conference was packed and in high attendance, with Hunan’s key technologists speaking on the opportunities blockchain brings to process validation and logistics. Our marketing director, Dean Pappas, spoke about the ETC Labs Accelerator and the projects that are building on Ethereum Classic.
All the projects were well received, but the information around Ethereum Classic’s commitment to immutability and backward compatibility was what really resonated with the local projects and academic leaders. This has created a development partnership with Changsha’s blockchain leaders that will see shared Research and Development of their projects on the Ethereum Classic Blockchain.
Hunan University
Hunan’s University is well-known for its engineering program, ranking amonst the top 100 in the world. Hunan University is also known as the “One Thousand Year Old University”, thanks to its incredible longevity. Developed from the Yuelu Academy founded in 976 AD, Hunan University is China’s oldest higher education institution.
Hunan University is part of both “Project 211” and “Project 985”, two of the Chinese government’s main investment projects in higher education. The university has been state-run since 1937.
For much of the 20th Century, the university was primarily a technology and engineering university. Around 30 of its alumni have gone on to become members of either the Chinese Academy of Science or the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Most of the programmes in the engineering department can be studied in English.
In the 2000s the university broadened its curriculum to offer a comprehensive range of subjects. The university now has 23 colleges and departments, as well as the Graduate School.

National Supercomputing Center in Changsha
The Changsha Center is located on the campus of Hunan University, with a construction area of some 27,000 square meters. Hunan University is responsible for the overall management and operation of the center, while the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), another comprehensive national key university located in Changsha, provides technical support.
The Center provides a significant support platform for the development of “Digital Hunan” with its ultra-high-speed network, mass data storage, and high-performance computing.
It is the third national supercomputing center after Tianjin and Shenzhen that received approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology in October, 2010.
