As part of our new 8 part series, we look at various industries and how they are revolutionizing the way that we do our everyday tasks and usher us into web 3.0. This week we look at social media platforms on the blockchain and how they look to create new systems that improve our experience online.

Mithril — Snapchat Replacement

Market Cap — $31,000,000

24 Hour Volume — $4,237,810

Current Rank on CMC: 110

Mithril is a social mined currency that rewards content creators through the PiePie platform. The company is based in Taiwan and has an increased following within Taiwan as well as the rest of the world. Mithril aims to allow users across multiple platforms to be able to acquire MITH through social mining.

Posts disappear after a short amount of time, similar to Snapchat.

With the PiePie platform, users add to their story in a similar way to the scheme of Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram. Utilizing the platform is extremely simple and has nice filters and photo editing features. While mining Mithril is quite slow, the platform runs smoothly and is fairly easy to gain a decent following. It seems that PiePie could be an easy replacement for Snapchat and other social platforms, in that users have incentive to use it as they are earning mined currency.

D.Tube — YouTube Killer

Market Cap — no native token, utilizes STEEM

D.Tube is the decentralized version of YouTube, which aims to reward content creators with Steem, fight censorship, create a fair platform, and stay ad free. Videos are uploaded on IPFS and have a much higher upload speed than on YouTube, giving a huge advantage to content creators (vloggers know the pain of waiting for YouTube videos to upload). Additionally, due to the fact that D.Tube is on the blockchain, there is no way for the platform to censor videos. The community of users are the only ones that can “censor” videos through down-voting. Additionally, the fact that D.Tube is ad free makes for an overall better user experience.

D.Tube or YouTube? Pretty hard to tell the difference except for the monetization.

Using the D.Tube platform is a seamless transition for anyone that is familiar with YouTube. All of the standard features that are available on YouTube have been integrated into D.Tube, such as Hot Videos, Trending Videos, Watch Later, and Watch Again. Additionally, viewing videos still includes manipulation of watch speed, easy fast forward/rewind, as well as jumping between certain points of the video. It makes sense that D.Tube will become more prominent, as it again rewards content creators and creates a better user experience. So far, the D.Tube platform runs smoothly and we have not noticed any major errors.

Rocket Chat — Slack Slayer

Market Cap — None, open sourced decentralized platform

Rocket Chat, by far, is one of the most user friendly and feature heavy collaboration tools currently available. Similar in look to Slack, Rocket Chat is free and open source for teams to utilize. One of the best features that Rocket Chat offers is the video conferencing feature. While most teams will use secondary applications in order to communicate via video such as Skype or Google Hangouts, Rocket Chat has this feature built in, allowing for seamless transition from chat to call.

Video chat built in? Sign me up.

Services such as Rocket Chat are becoming more and more necessary. Recently, Slack made headlines for banning a users that had visited Iran at some point in order to “comply with sanctions.” Slack has made other censorship mistakes in the past which proves that centralized systems cannot be trusted to ensure freedom of speech. Slack bans have resulted in users losing excessive amounts of data and years worth of work. Since Rocket Chat is decentralized and open source, companies can feel comfortable knowing that they can simply create their own version of Rocket Chat and protect their data internally, if they choose to do so.

Choon — Potential Spotify Competitor

Market Cap: None, token release soon.

Choon is a decentralized blockchain solution for the music industry, becoming a direct and potential competitor with Spotify and Soundcloud. Currently, both centralized platforms will reward artists little to nothing for their streams, while benefiting from traffic and ad sales. Choon looks to provide a direct way for artists to be celebrated and compensated accordingly.

Not the best UI visually, but definitely functions well.

Currently, the platform feels like it is in preliminary stages. The UI certainly needs a bit of a touch up, but otherwise the service works brilliantly. I’ve been streaming music for over an hour on Choon and I have not ran into any errors or pauses in the stream. The navigation is straightforward, and currently there is still a decent selection of music available. Most of the artists listed are independent, but the quality of tunes is not sacrificed. When trying to search for major names, nothing really comes up. For now, this is a great place to listen to ad free independent artists and expand your music knowledge.

Bela — Instagram Substitute

Market Cap: $552,000

Current Rank on CMC: 881

Purchase on Ethex here

Bela is a near perfect replacement for Instagram, doing what most of the other social media blockchain projects are doing by rewarding content creators. We have previously written a full review of the Bela platform, which can be reviewed here.

Now available on Android.

The Belacam platform was just recently launched on the Google Play store, becoming accessible for Android users. Additionally, Bela announced that they have reached 50,000 users. Their filters and ease of use will allow Bela to most likely become more popular and a highly used app.
