My future as a journalist
By Marsha Green
As a journalist, there are a few characteristics that I would like to exemplify in the future. The first is to be “real.”
In the journalism field today it seems that many journalists lack the ability to keep their personality in tact. They lose themselves in the art of journalism, and aren’t authentic with the public. I choose to remain real; to give my honest opinions on topics, but while giving those opinions I choose to remain respectful. I believe that it is important to remain authentic, that creates a deep bond with those you will come in contact with.
I also prepare to be “fair.” Objectivity is something that I believe is hard to attain. As human beings, we are filled with not only natural emotions but also inclinations to cling to the things we believe in. These help to alter objectivity in journalism, but I believe that while you may not remain objective you can be fair. You can hear both sides of a spectrum without being biased, or feeling pressured to take a stance in the middle.
I also strive to be an “honest” journalist. Often times as journalists we shy from the truth, with fear that we will be too connected to our stories and our audiences. That may be the biggest obstacle that I will face, being able to remain honest, and not feeling that I have to hide the truth in order to remain professional. In 2018 honesty is something that is lacking, I plan to remain an honest journalist.
In the future, journalism won't be easy, but I strive to be real, fair, and honest.
