As the dust from the midterms settles, one thing’s becoming clear: go thank a woman, because they might have just saved America from fascism. After such a complex, close set of elections, the data’s slow to come in, and hard to parse. And yet what there is so far shows, well, what should be obvious to any living, breathing person. Women were pissed off.

I knew it when my lovely wife and I were driving through the little town I grew up in. Just outside DC, a cute little place. Snowy grinned from the back seat through the window. Never — not once — in my life had I seen any form of political activism there. Even when I was a teenager, and we used to march for gay rights, at the height of the AIDS crisis, we’d take to DC’s streets — not the quaint little boulevards of the little placid town, full of everything from vintage shops to restaurants, the old Irish pub there, the art studio here.

So when I saw teen girls lined up outside the public library wearing “bans off our bodies T-shirts,” and shouting, right after Roe was repealed — color me surprised. Sweety, look, I exclaimed. They’re…protesting. She grinned fiercely. I honked the horn, and cheered on the high schoolers. They…
