The EU Now Podcast: A Transatlantic Deep Dive

In a world where war is everybody’s tragedy and everybody’s nightmare, diplomacy is everybody’s business.

Lord Strang, attributed, The Practice of Diplomacy: Its Evolution, Theory, and Administration.

The Delegation of the European Union to the US is launching a podcast series called EU Now. Twice a month, we invite our listeners to experience the European Union — and those working to actualize it — in a more personal way. Beyond the headlines, each episode focuses on a different facet of the EU: counterterrorism, public health, gender equality, the economy, culture, and history, to name a few. Tune in for interviews with commissioners, historians, social movement and civil society leaders, ambassadors, economists, EU staffers, and regular citizens.

Why do this? The other day, a colleague of mine was pumped up after an interview she’d had with an ambassador. In addition to answering her questions, the natural flow of conversation had revealed anecdotes from his career, intriguing details about his role, and a more personal and unified view of a country, that suddenly, no longer seemed so foreign. When we hear from the people representing ideas, places or governments, we get a two-for-one — we learn about their expertise, but the realness of their voice and expressions closes the distance between us. Closing gaps is diplomacy in action.

And since we are in the business of diplomacy, the EU is just one side of the story. EU Now takes one step further to uncover the EU-US relationship in all of these issues. We seek to answer questions such as: How much do we really impact one another? Where do we differ? What can we learn from each other?
