Český Krumlov, Czechia

After Prague, I moved south to stay for a couple of days in České Budějovice, mainly as a gateway to visit Český Krumlov from. České Budějovice is also known as Budweis, and is where the American brand took its name (the American beer has to be sold in much of Europe as simply ‘Bud’, as the actual Budweiser brewery is not related).

Český Krumlov’s quintessential tower looking over the town

I’d wanted to visit Český Krumlov as it’s supposed to be one of the most picturesque places in Europe. I wasn’t disappointed. Its old town is nestled in a curve of the Vltava River (the same river that later flows through Prague), and is overlooked by a majestic castle on the opposite bank. It seems to be obligatory to describe the castle as ‘fairytale’. I also saw the tower described as ‘the quintessential tower’.

I was glad, however, that I’d taken the decision to stay in České Budějovice. Český Krumlov was incredibly busy and full of large tourist groups. It was possible to find quieter back streets and the castle gardens offered some respite too, but I prefer not having to seek these places out.
