Olomouc, Czechia

I used Olomouc, in the east of Czechia, for a few days in order to visit some of the sites in the surrounding area. It has good train and bus connections to a lot of Moravia, so was perfect for my purposes. It also happens to be a very pretty town in its own right. Filled with baroque monuments and fountains, it’s a great place to stroll along the cobbled streets.

Scientist mural on the Olomouc astronomical clock

The main square, one of the largest in the country, is dominated by both the magnificent Holy Trinity Column and the enormous town hall. The hall has a rather odd astronomical clock adorning one of its walls. It was damaged during the Second World War, so was replaced during the Communist era. Therefore, instead of the usual religious icons, it is full of labourers — agricultural workers, scientists, mechanics, etc. Every noon the figures rotate around to a carillon tune before a hilariously lacklustre cockerel crows. It was worth staying here just to hear that.
