What’s the Point of Hashtags?

Twitter has become a factory of hashtags, but what’s so good about a fragment that reduces an action and generalizes it?

For starters, it’s simplistic and playful. The user doesn’t seem less intelligent by using it, but rather hip. Twitter’s character limit promoted the hashtag to quickly relay an emotion or action, but it has become an means of categorizing anything, including emotions and events. It has also become a way of marketing because of the categorizing nature of it.

It has almost — because of it’s popularity and easy division — become the spam of digital media. The excessive need to categorize has been created; this coupled with the obsession to document every moment has created an new social era.

But always remember that Hashtags have the ability to clutter and suffocate what ever is being presented. Hashtag responsibility, my friends.
