So, remembering to take time for yourself is tricky, right? It’s the type of the thing that just stays in the back of your head but you always forget to actually do. There’s always something more pressing that needs to get done, so its easy to let self-care to fall to the wayside. So what can you do to make sure you take some time for self care? That’s where the self-care jar comes in.

Here’s some tips to making your own self-care jar:

Create your self-care jar

The great thing about a self-care jar is they’re cheap and easy to make. All you need is a jar (or bowl, or any type of receptacle really), some paper, and something to write with. On each piece of paper, write a self-care idea down. It can be something small, like “take a bubble bath” or “treat yourself to an ice cream cone”. Or, you can put something bigger, like “take yourself out for a nice meal”. You can just put in 50 pieces of paper that just say “treat yo’ self” as a reminder if you want. The beauty of it is, you can put in ideas that fit your lifestyle best.

Set a schedule

One of the best ways to make sure you remember to use the self-care jar is to decide how often you’re going to pull a slip out. It could be daily, weekly, or simply used for emergencies; when you’re stressed out and need to take a moment. Do what fits your needs the best, then stick to it. Setting a schedule will remind you to not push self-care aside.

Need some ideas?

It can be kinda tricky to come up with a bunch of self-care ideas to put in a jar. How do you decide what’s feasible and worthy of going into the jar? There’s plenty ideas on websites like Pinterest to get started. However, you can also start by thinking what it is you personally want to do. Is there a book you’ve wanted but have put off purchasing? Have you been interested in starting yoga but are a little scared? Do you just want some time to sit and watch Netflix? What are the things you’ve really wanted but keep being pushed aside? Start with those.

We all can use a reminder to be kind to ourselves once in a while. Its easy to forget or feel guilty about taking time for self-care; but it helps us be the best we can be. So if you’re having trouble remembering self-care, quick make yourself a jar! That way, self-care is easy as picking a piece of paper from a jar.
