4 Signs That It’s Time to Break Up with your Legacy Event Technology

Hey, we’ve all been there. Sometimes you end up in a relationship that just isn’t working anymore. I know, you really wanted this to work out, but you’re just not happy anymore. They used to be the greatest, the Gold Standard in fact, but these days, well, they’ve kind of lost their luster. And you wonder, is it me? Maybe my expectations are too high? Maybe I’m asking too much?

Well, it’s probably not you. That legacy event technology platform might just not be the right one for you anymore. Maybe you’ve grown apart, or maybe it’s just time to move on and find another provider that better fits your needs.

Here’s 4 signs that it’s time to break up with your old Event Technology:

1 — They’re just not meeting your needs anymore. You’re paying for 100% of the capabilities, yet you’re only using or taking advantage of 25% of the platform. Many old legacy systems were built on old technology, and try to be all things to all people. For example, you might be using a platform that offers Registration, Strategic Meetings Management, Simple Budget Management, Site Selection, Supplier Management, Matchmaking, Mobile Event App, and a host of others solutions. They may do one or two of these things really well, but many of the other functions are pretty mediocre. As a result, you’re only using 1–2 out of 8–10 modules, but paying for the entire platform.

2 — They keep hinting they want a long term commitment, but you’re having second thoughts. Many of the old legacy systems are pushing for 3, 4 even 5 year contracts and offering discounts if you commit. DON’T DO IT! Technology changes so rapidly, and the costs of technology come down after time — keeping your options open benefits you in the long run as it gives you the added flexibility to explore new and better options to better meet your changing needs.

3 — Communication is strained, and they’re harder and harder to understand. Tech platforms should have an easy to understand and intuitive user interface, and shouldn’t need one or two weeks of training every year to get the most out of the systems. Some of the older legacy systems require and even charge for training. And if you don’t take advantage? See issue number 1.

4 — They’re very stubborn and don’t want to connect with others. Some of the older legacy systems simply don’t have API’s, or if they do they want to charge you for access. This means that they want to control who they integrate with, or don’t integrate at all and simply want to provide the service you’re seeking themselves.

It’s tough to leave a legacy technology platform that you’ve grown accustomed to and maybe that you’re comfortable with. But as they say, “there’s plenty of fish in the sea” especially when it comes to event technology. A lot of small emerging companies with innovative products that are easy to use, scalable, integrate with other platforms, and constantly improving their offerings.

Companies like Hubb.me for abstract management, Swoogo for registration, MAP Digital/MetaMeetings for Digital Content, Eventpedia or AnyEvent Apps for mobile apps, or dozens of others found at EventTechGuide.

And these days, with the integration platform from Built.io & The Event Guys, you can build technology stacks out of “best of class” platforms and have them all integrated to do exactly as you want and need to run your meetings and events.

So, yeah, breaking up is hard to do, but a whole new world in Event Technology is waiting for you. What are you waiting for?
